Saturday’s Mahler 9th Symphony
Saturday’s Mahler 9th Symphony
I wrote this post before our concert and now I want to share my thoughts after the performance. I looked forward to playing Mahler’s Ninth Symphony even though I was not very familiar with it. Moreover, the music proved complex and full of beautiful moments that both challenged and inspired me.
Concert Updates and Mahler’s Ninth Symphony Changes
The BBC Philharmonic announced that Mark Wigglesworth had to withdraw from Saturday’s concert for personal reasons. Fortunately, Yoel Gamzou stepped in to conduct the orchestra. He is a renowned Mahler specialist whose edition of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony is celebrated worldwide. As a result of this change, the programme removed Britten’s Sinfonia da Requiem and shifted the focus solely to Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, which we performed straight through with no interval.
Reflecting on the Mahler Experience
Approaching Mahler’s Ninth Symphony with fresh eyes allowed me to uncover many layers of emotion and intricate dynamics. In addition, I experienced strong transitions, quiet reflections, and powerful crescendos as the piece unfolded. This performance pushed me out of my comfort zone and contributed to my growth as a musician. Furthermore, I embraced each moment, which made the experience even more rewarding.
Additional Information and Reflections
