BBC Philharmonic Concert @ Mediacity
The BBC Philharmonic’s concert today, conducted by Moritz Gnann, offers a rich program spanning three centuries of classical music. Opening with Mozart’s Symphony No. 35, ‘Haffner’, the concert begins on a celebratory note. This symphony, composed in 1782, reflects Mozart’s exuberant style and was an instant hit with the Viennese public.
Next, we transition to Antonín Dvořák’s 1879 Romance for Violin and Orchestra, showcasing his deep understanding of classical form and romantic harmony. The lyrical and virtuosic piece highlights Dvořák’s early talent for the violin.
Following Dvořák, we move to Hans Gál’s Concertino for Violin and Strings. Composed in 1939, this work reflects a sense of sanctuary and lightness, despite the turbulent times during which it was written.
Finally, the concert concludes with two works by Felix Mendelssohn. His Fifth Symphony, ‘Reformation’, written in 1830, celebrates the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession. Additionally, the uplifting Wedding March from “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” ends the program on a joyous note.
Soloist Zoë Beyers, the leader of the BBC Philharmonic, will perform Dvořák’s Romance and Gál’s Concertino, bringing her virtuosic talent to these pieces. This concert promises to be an enriching experience, celebrating diverse expressions of orchestral music from the 18th to the 20th centuries.
