Conducting Diplomas at MediaCity
Conducting Diplomas at MediaCity
On Wednesday, I had the privilege of performing with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra at MediaCityUK for the Royal Northern College of Music’s International Diploma in Conducting — an extraordinary event that offers a front‑row seat to the next generation of conducting talent.
Supporting Emerging Talent
This diploma concert is a longstanding collaboration between the RNCM and BBC Philharmonic, and one I’ve supported for many years. Each time, I’m struck by how fascinating it is to see aspiring conductors showcase their musical leadership at such a pivotal moment in their careers. This year, the standard felt particularly high — huge credit to the tutors for preparing their students so thoroughly.
A Demanding and Dynamic Programme
The programme was not for the faint‑hearted. It featured a broad range of repertoire, full of contrasting styles and technical challenges — the sort of works that truly test a conductor’s control, communication, and musical insight. Among the pieces were:
-
Strauss – Die Fledermaus, Overture
Sparkling and full of tempo shifts, it demands real clarity from the podium. -
Lutosławski – Cello Concerto (soloist: Findlay Spence)
A modern, richly layered work requiring intense coordination between conductor, soloist, and orchestra. -
Weber – Oberon Overture
Lyrical Romantic gestures contrasting beautifully with the evening’s more dramatic works. -
Schumann – Manfred: Overture
Dramatic and emotionally charged, with demanding phrasing and dynamic control. -
Hindemith – Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes by Weber
Vibrant and rhythmically intricate, it closed the concert with exhilarating energy.
The conductors were Benjamin Voce, Alec Frank‑Gemmill and Connor Lyster, each bringing individual flair and precision to the platform. Every gesture and cue was under scrutiny, and they handled the pressure with composure and confidence.
A Rewarding Collaboration
As a member of the orchestra, I found this year’s conducting diplomas especially memorable. These works challenge not only the conductors but the entire ensemble, and it’s a testament to the synergy between podium and players that the performances were so polished.
I always leave these events feeling inspired by the talent on display. It’s a joy to play a part in their journey and to witness the future of classical music leadership unfold live on stage.
